It was called "Welcome Back, Kotter" and also starred Gabe Kaplan [as the teacher]. Travolta's character's name was Vinnie Barberino...and he was gorgeous in those days. It may have been put on DVD by now--check Google for "TV on DVD" and start looking! p.s., that was Travolta's first gig, I think he got picked for "Saturday Nite Fever" afterwards, based on how hot he was as Vinnie. For extra trivia points: Gabe Kaplan is an absolutely superbimundo poker player - makes more money at the tables than he ever did as an actor!

You are thinking of welcome back kotter. He was in a gang called the sweat hogs. His character in there was called Vinny Barberino. I hope this was what you wanted to know. I use to love to watch that comedy in the late 70's. I its coming on DVD for the very first time. I think maybe some time next week or sometime this month.
