marriage is for families and love, and there are benefits to being married as opposed to living together...

First of all, heterosexual means "straight" meaning girls like boys and boys like girls. Secondly, heterosexual marriages are common. They happen almost everyday, so I have no clue why you think they should be illegal.

Yes; marriage began as a way for a father to ship off his daughter and having to pay some one to take her. Then they would be pretty much be slaves and baby machines. The sewing machine changed that because women had more time to themselves and wanted more rights. At one point, Austrian women would throw parties and invite her husband's mistress.
Just because it's not such a vivide form of slavary now, patricary will only die when women aren't expected to give up the only thing that would have been with them from the beginning: their names.
