or would you want the minority who needed "affirmative action" or minority concessions to get into college and med school, not on merrit alone?

Or needed Afirmative Action to get a residency?

Interesting. Most people dont mind that there were more qualified individuals were turned away to an education in medicine, so an underqualified person could take their spot... VERY F_ING SAD

Well, maybe the affirmative action minority will try harder than the brainy doctor. So, let's say I need knee surgery. The smarter doctor would probably do everything flawlessly, but he'd probably have a real attitude and schedule my surgery around his golf outings.

The minority doctor might take longer to do the surgery, might have to pause a few times to check his medical books, and might forget a small sponge inside me, but he's doing the best job he can. You know, all those medical books are so unnecessarily complicated, and they're all written in English, so if his native language is Spanish for example, we should cut him some slack as he is cutting into us.

Let's say the minority doctor doesn't do such a great job. I would feel better knowing my money went to him. He might have some huge family with six children, compared to that snooty white-bread doctor who has just one little princess of a daughter named "Brie". Maybe my knee won't work quite as well, but at least I've helped out his six kids. Brie probably already has a polo pony. She doesn't need my hard earned money like the minority doctor and his constantly pregnant wife.

I would never look at a physician's rank in college... I would look at his experience and his actual expertise. I could care less of what his GPA or any academic accolades he has received.

Med School is a very far cry from real medicine. I wouldn't even really care what med school he graduated from... I would just want a very experienced surgeon with a great reputation... and I wouldn't bother about how he got into that position. I would have a lot better things to worry about by the time I need a surgeon.

I would want the best doctor.

Class standing might indicate something and it might not. I have known excellent doctors who might not have been at the top of their class.

I don't particularly like affirmative action as it is often practiced, but I would have no problem being treated by a minority doctor. In fact most of my last six doctors have been members of a minority.

My best doctor, however, is a nonminority urologist who is a retired Air Force colonel. I would rank him among the best urologists in the country. I have no idea what his class standing was.

Well, the rich have affirmative action. They get automatic entrances into any school they want, whether they are dumb or not! You want one of them?

Actually, studies have shown that those who have the middle grades in Medical school make better Md's than those at the top of their class!

The person who invented the surgery In 1944 at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, surgeon Alfred Blalock, pediatric cardiologist Helen Taussig, and surgical technician Vivien Thomas perfected a technique for correcting the birth defect that causes the blue-baby syndrome.

Although the operation was on blood vessels external to the heart and did not require a heart-lung machine, its success proved that intervention near the living heart was possible. During the next decade, surgeons developed and refined many techniques for correcting heart defects. Dr DeBakey assisted in the surgery!

Vivian Thomas actually invented the procedure and talked Blalock through the surgery. Thomas was a black man who, at the most, had a high school education. He now has an Honorary Medical Degree from John Hopkins and his picture is next to Alfred Blalocks at John Hopkins!

Funny, at the time Reagan was trying to cut student loans, he was shot and nearly died. When thanking the Md. that saved his life, he gently reminded him he went through medical school on a student loan. His parents were immigrants!

A lot of people with better grades than those who applied and accepted. My daughter applied to Duke! As Duke accepts mostly the rich, students from North Carolina, they have a very limited number of slots for others, she was not accepted. Sher was Valadictorian of her class, had a 4.0 average, went to a private Catholic School and played 4 years of varsity basketball. She now has a Masters from the University of Wisconsin at Madison! I am proud to say she is also a liberal!

Don't feel like people are not discrimanated against for many reasons! And a 4.0 average means nothing to big Universities. That is generally all that apply from out-of-state!

I'm opposed to affirmative action, because we don't need it.

But I don't over-simplify what I consider a good doctor, either.

You're reading different answers than I am. I don't see anyone saying this. But your question was worded poorly. The top of the class? That is a subjective standard, also.

I don't care if that person is male or female, short or tall, fat or skinny, black or white, born in this country or another, I just want the best!

There are many people who weren't at the top of their class simply because they didn't maximize their potential. I would prefer to base my decision on reputation and word of mouth. :)

Liberals would rather follow Michael Moore to Cuba for that surgery.
