I have a betta, and in order to clean his tank, I usually just scoop him out with a net and put him into a bowl. However, today, instead of going into the bowl as usual, he fell straight onto the floor (a 3 foot drop). He layed there, completely motionless. I put him in the bowl, but he didn't move for quite a while unless I coaxed him. Now, about 30 minutes later, he seems to be doing okay. I do believe he went into shock before.

My question is, how do I prevent this from happening? How do I effectively get him into the bowl as safely as possible? I don't want this to happen to him again- he has great sentimental value to me (my grandmother had him, and she passed away a few months ago).

Any educated answer would be greatly appreciated.

The very best answer for you is to get a small filtered and heated aquarium for your betta. Something around 2.5 gallons is perfect. In this situation you need not remove the fish from the tank to clean it, you simply remove about 25% of the water with a gravel siphon once a week and replae the water with declorinated tap water of the same temperature as the tank. Much safer and mush better living conditions from your betta.

If you prefer to keep him the way you have him, then the best thing to do is simply be as careful as humanly possible and know that this can occur from time to time.

The 'best advice' I can give you is to use the net to transfer him' but put your hand over the opening when you are moving it from tank to bowl or bowl to tank. The reason your beta didn't move was because he'd had the 'wind' knocked out of him ... and you may need to 'watch him carefully' for the next two or three days to make sure he wasn't 'injured' during the fall ... but fish are very hearty creatures, and he should be 'fine' ... and you need to 'just be a bit more careful' next time you clean his tank.

an basic thank you to do it fairly is to take the sparkling out of your different tank (that is theory in case you have 2 filters) and placed it on the hot tank and allow the filter out run for some days with the hot filter out for the tank. After 2-3 days the tank is waiting for fish because of the fact the filter out which you place on the hot tank has each and every of the previous micro organism so the colonies get transferred to the hot tank and new filter out . this could velocity up the cycling technique of course. nicely what proportion fish do you have and what sort of fish do you have? because of the fact if that could be a education fish like tetras that could be a great theory to gradually upload them say 5 each and every week. yet whilst they're cichlids like SA/CA, i could upload them on the comparable time because of the fact they could ascertain territories. ultimate of success!

This is a two person job (at least when I do it, it is). My boyfriend slowly pours the water out of his bowl. I stick a cup underneath and catch the water until the cup is about half full. Once there is not very much water in the bowl, we pour mr fishy into the cup. I hope this makes sense. It works every time!

If its just shock i think you can just keep using a net. The shock should be ok. I just pour him into another bowl. There is also a stress coat you can buy.

If you got dropped 9 to 12 times your body length to the floor, you would go into shock to.

Lucky he survived. A net should gently envelope the fish. Yours i guess doesn't.
