OK, so why does Lebanon lets itself be intimidated - even "governed" by Syria? From this far away, it looks as if Lebanon has no friends, no allies or no backbone

Ouch. Lebanon does have friends, allies and BACKBONE.
However, they can only do so much to deter radical muslims from destroying them. It is so volatile in the Middle east that if allies came in to help Lebanon, it would probably trigger the biggest war our planet has ever seen.

they don't,you might want to research the subject. Syria does try to influence Lebanons politics,but they don't govern them. it has been like 4 years since Syria was kicked out,of course there will be some influence left,but there are changes

Because they are both being held hostage by Iran. Hezbollah is a proxy group for Iran.

Niether country, Syria or Lebanon, makes its own rules.
