Fish grow to the size of their enclosure. So fish that are kept in tanks only grow to a size that will be suitable to live in that environment. The larger the tank the fish will grow larger. Also depends how many fish are in that tank. Thus the fish we eat come from a large body of water... thus the larger size.

The most important factor in this point is the containing environment. The fish we eat either are cultured or fished in the wild environment (sea, rivers, estuaries and lakes). So when we have for example a goldfish, it won't grow further the size of the aquarium and the same time a fish grows in a tankor pond with 7.5X5X10 m dimensions. On the other hand, the fish we eat are fish we want them to be long because is the sourse of our food. Can you imagine instead of a small goldfish to have in your aquarium a 150 cm long trout or salmon???

In addition i would also add that the fish we eat are under continuous research in order to grow faster and more...

I don't know that I totally understand your question, but I'll take a stab at it. Many of the fish we choose to have as pets do not get very big because they were chosen specifically to live in a tank. They make good pets because they don't get huge. There are many people who have pet fish that are very very large, but need huge tanks and much care.

I also think some species of fish will not grow as quickly in a small tank environment or will die before their time because the tank is not large enough.

I also think that some fish that get large, do so over the course of many, many years. In the wild, they may live that long, but in captivity, their lifespan is only as long as the person caring for them can manage to keep them alive and continue to purchase larger tanks.

Many fish that we eat are raised in captivity, like bass and trout. I think that ocean fish are not raised for eating because it is still much cheaper to go out and catch them than raise them.

The very idea that the bigger the tank the larger the fish is totally and completely false. It's purely a matter of genetics, just like Great Danes will always get larger than Poodles. Generally we keep fish with much smaller adult sizes is all.

fish will only grow to the size that the tank allows them, also many fish that are very big are also quite old, it still takes a couple years for fish to get say 12'' depending on the species, also many aquarium fish don't normally grow that big anyways (there are some exceptions)

genetics and the fish we eat has more space, like the big ocen and river and lakes while our fish we keep in 10 gallons don't have enough space to grow into a large fish. like goldfish can grow HUGE but people just want to "display them in a gallon container which stunts their growth and seems like goldfish livee for a short time .

so basically it matters on which fish your talking about. guppies are usually small because its for what who they are. and others such as goldfish mattters on their tank size and care

some of the fish we raise do get very big,it all depend on the breed of the fish, the size tank you raise them in,they will only get so big in a small tank, you can put them in a bigger tank and they will grow bigger.its weired but true.

Because they will not grow beyond a certain size if the container or tank they are in is not enough to support their development.
