Thirteen but they have baby sitting classes at our local hospital that starts them at 12. If they are a mature 12 then they can handle the responsibility.

First it depends on the child, second you should call your local non-emergency police number and ask, they will be able to tell you. Also, it's best to get the information from them (local police) because if someone does decide to call the police on you, you would be in compliance.

In Illinois, a child has to be 12 to be left unattended.
