Eat better. Your body is detoxing right now & the extra nutrition can help.
Take B Complex 100 mg. & some ginseng, too. This should help with your moods.
Buy distilled water & drink it. It will help your body detox faster.
Go to health food store & buy the herb "lobelia". It tricks the body into thinking it has ingested nicotene while helping calm you down.
Place some healthy snacks around for you to much on & help with the hand/mouth addiction.
Identify your "triggers". Mine were: behind the steering wheel, when I had coffee & when I was on the phone. I put the snacks in those areas & that really helped.

since you smoke that much everyday, your body got adjusted having these poisons running ur body. That's why people with more serious drug problems can actually die by quiting abruptly. You hav to take decrease your amount of cigarettes maybe every few weeks or whatever you're comfortable with. The reason why you were coughing and stuff (tryign to not smoke) was because your body was so used to having 2-5 cigarettes a day. So each week you should decrease slowly from 2-4cigarettes, then another few weeks, 2-3, then so on.

Visit a cancer ward. When you see someone with oxygen lines in their nose sneak a smoke, you'll know there's something in nicotine that's just plain bad for you.
I had a boss who smoked for years until his father died from lung cancer; that was the day he stopped cold turkey. An emotional shock could be answer. It's easy to think smoking will never amount to anything, but it does.
Good for you; I wish my mom would quit. It's a gift you give to the people who love you.

I saw this on Honey We're Killing the Kids Once. A dad needed to quit smoking and was cranky when he didn't smoke. The show gave him punching bags. Whenever he became cranky because he didn't ahve a cigarette he'd punch the bag. Aside from quitting smoking, he lost a lot of weight and became physically fit.

The only way to really stop smoking is to go cold turkey. You must really want to quit, then use your will power, and just quit. I did this years ago. I did have withdrawal symptoms, but I stuck with it. Later I found out I had cancer. Wish I had quit earlier.

Carry some Glucose sweets with you. The reason why you are so irritable it is because your sugar levels have dropped in your blood stream. I was told this by my stop smoking class I go to. Also if the patches don't help alone, use another stop smoking aid in between. (Gum, etc)

Take a cigarette box and put in cut up straws, being they are about the same size around as a cigarette. Cut them to lenght, and when you feel the crave, reach for your pack of "smokes" (straws) and pretend you are smoking or simply chew on the straw. It's the "used to putting a smoke in your mouth" Hopefully this will help you. My wife did it for a while, when on the patch, and together, it made her stop. Good luck. You can do it if you set your mind to it.
