I notice you didn't cite your source like a typical YA con. Anyway, the answer is really simple: most federal jobs require at least a bachelor's degree, often a masters or PhD and people with those degrees make a lot more money than those who lack education. It's the same reason the suburbs around DC (McLean, Potomac, etc.) are ranked as the most educated communities in the US.

I have to disagree with acermill. If you NEED the $2.00 calculator, you are probably not qualified to use it. Besides, she was sitting next to a $1000+ calculator when she typed the question. I have never heard of a computer with Internet access and no calculator function.

BTW: $24,300 / 52 wks = $467.31

About $467 a week. It takes a $2 calculator to figure that out.
$24,300 a year divided by 52 weeks.....duh.....$467.31 weekly.
