1. Start the way you mean to go on. Don't "wait on" him unless you plan to do it for 60 years.
2. Assume that your spouse means well no matter how stupid or tactless or thoughtless his remark, gift, whatever was.
3. Think of your marriage as a project for the two of you, a great adventure. You can make it anyway you want and don't have to follow any patterns that others have.
4. Never complain about your spouse to others.--Do complain to him in the right way. The right way means no complaining or confronting about a one-time event, like dancing the hula in Hawaii. It does mean facing a circumstance that might happen again, like re-gifting at Christmas or leaving the lid up.
5. Be respectful. Contempt is the surest way to ruin your marriage.
6. Show that you value your marriage by celebrating your anniversary every year--with time, not necessarily stuff. Do something pleasant together every week, whether you call it Date Night or whatever.
7. Associate your spouse with good times. Have fun and laugh with him--not just your girlfriends. If you only talk about problems, you'll begin to associate him with feeling bad.

1. We come to love not by finding a perfect person, but by learning to see an imperfect person perfectly.
2. Work like you don't need the money, love like you've never been hurt and dance like no one is watching.
3. Never give up on something that you can't go a day without thinking about.
4. Live with no excuses and love with no regrets.
5. To the world you may be but one, but to one you might be the world.
6. Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become character.
Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.
