The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS) is the world's first professional body of accountants, receiving its Royal Charter in 1854. It was the first to adopt the designation "Chartered Accountant" and the designatory letters "CA" are still an exclusive privilege in the UK for members of the Scottish Institute.

Members of The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales (ICAEW) have the designation ACA (Associate) or FCA (Fellow) after their name.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland is a professional accountancy body in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. It is the sole organisation in Ireland with the right to award the Chartered Accountant designation. Members of the Institute use the designatory letters ACA. Senior members may be elected Fellows and use the designatory letters FCA.

The rest of the EU, for international communications purposes, generally use CPA (Certified Public Accountant) in line with the rest of the world, including Asia Pacific
