I just bought a new 2007 Mini Convertible (non S-Type). I believe the owners manual suggests putting in Premium gas only. However, with an engine as small as the Mini's is this really necessary? What is the advantages of going with Premium gas?

You could probably get away with it, as the engine's computer will compensate, but you will get degraded performance (acceleration) and probably less gas mileage.

You should use premium because that's what the engine is built for, for optimum performance.

I suppose you could try mid-range and see how the car feels. I think on regular you will notice right away that it's not the best for your car.

But don't let people freak you out by telling you that you'll damage the engine. Your engine is smart enough to protect itself....but it won't like what you're making it "eat".

The manual should give you a minimum octane rating for gas. Most new vehicles need an octane of "87" or higher. Regular gas is normaly 87. However, most manufacturers suggest premium because it is higher in octane, more refined and cleaner. I run only premium in my Harley, even though it could get by with "regular".

The car is meant for premium. The engine will work better. The cost is only a little bit higher, you will get more mileage out of it anyway.

Running regular has the risk of voiding your warranty.

The car's design requires it due to its compression ratio. A small sized engine must have a high ratio to make enough power. Regular gas will kill the performance, and could lead to damage in the long term.

the design engineers spent years to make a compact engine with high performance.
you may save a few dollars, but be prepared to spend few thousands in 12 months.
You are going to drag the car so badly, which in turn going to damage your engine and transmission in due course.
STICK TO MANUFACTURERS SUGGESTIONS.and maintain proper servicing.
You will have a trouble free car for 8 years.
Dont be penny wise ,pound foolish.
YOUR CAR IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY,PLS AVOID THIS
GAS CHANGE.
sorry about ya!

You could probably use regular most of the time but from time to time you will need to put high octane in it to clean out your tank.
