Long ago, in the middle of the day the streets were deserted. Everyone was working, or in school. Nowadays, any city USA, the streets are crowded all day, every day. I know only 1% of 1% of the population work shift work. So who are all these people? Don't they work? Who's paying for all of this?

I wondered that to. Also tried to figure it out. These are those people.

Transportation is easier to get.

1. Service people. Remember a lot of service people work on Saturday and Sunday. So they take care of business during Monday - Friday which every two days they have off. Mostly government and none Service people are mostly off on Saturday and Sunday.

2. People on Vacation

3. Unemployed people, People looking for a job or new job. Employment offices now require people to get out and actively look for a job. Back in the day you can look at the paper and write something down. (that's what I heard).

4. Homeless

5. Lunch break, or break.

6. Shopping for work

7. Leaving or going to work

8. Stay at home parent

9. Going to meetings. Before meetings were held at the job, now you have to go to different sites.

10. Disability. can not work.

12. Working only 4 days. 12 hr. days.

13. A lot of jobs only hire part time. No longer 9-5 for everyone. come in at 8 leave at 12.

There's lots of reasons,

But with flex work day and hours you will see more people on the streets.

Times has changed, people have more flexibility with there lives.

I don't know about USA but i often have the same question here in the UK . Well, the UK is full of people who don't want to work , and asylum seekers and refugees who don't want to work either. Unfortunately the UK government will support them in any possible way , but if you work and pay taxes - you get nothing ! If you loose your job and have savings - you get nothing as well !
Would be interesting to know what the situation in the USA !
If it is the same - god help us !!!The suggestion would be - to go abroad , loose your passport and claim political asylum back in your own country - you would be better off then !

I wonder about this too

during lunch I often run errands and I see people everywhere

I know these people aren't running errands during work like me because of how they are dressed

and they aren't going to work later either because they are too "upscale"

many people are retired I know, even early

also, lots of people own businesses with lots of flexibility

and when I go to the poorer section of town, I know that many of the people are out of work, out looking for shift jobs (you can see them on the trains with apps) and that many will go in to work later

more than 1% of the population does shift work by the way, even people like welders, journeymen, truck drivers and nurses, besides people who work at restaurants....

and more women are stay at homes and poorer women often don't have the money now to pay people to keep their kids

Why dont you ask them? See what they are doing, whether they have jobs or what is the reason they are all out on the streets? You could do it like you're interviewing for a school project or something, maybe a college project if you're older.

Rather than rush to judgement about what people are doing, go ASK them first.
