That is definately the nanny state getting carried away in my opinion. The authorities should have the family educated on healthy eating, have the child weighed in every other week and made to walk to school and take up sports. In fact, schools should host compulsory sports after school without parents having to fork out big money for clubs and things.

removing children from their parents is the cruelest thing you can do - what on earth would that achieve other than heart ache for both parties. Some parents need to be educated on food, nutrition and the benefits of regular exercise. I would imagine that there are very few parents who actually make their children obsese as a form of calculated abuse.Parents also need to be shown how to buy good food on a budget - it is possible but it's about education. Perhaps the nanny state should step in a bit more when a child is being abused physically or mentally rather than letting social workers generally ignore the problem until it's too late for some - that is real child abuse.

It is not the childrens fault they are obese. I blame the parents. The mother or father depending who does the shopping could buy more healthier options and they could go for a brisk walk as a family every day or invest in some exercise DVD's or Videos and some simple exercise equipments. I don't think children should be removed from the parents. That is rather harsh. No matter what size they are they are still the same person.

How about children with dirty finger nails? Should we put them in foster care too? How about children with tangled hair? mismatched socks?

Seriously, as a foster parent, and mother of six, you're getting carried away. The world is full of imperfect parents, I'm a card carrying member of that club. And although I don't agree with allowing your child to become obesse, the parents shouldn't loose their children over it. Obese children can become healthy adults. Remember children turn out they way they do, many times despite the parents best efforts. ;)

No . Yes .
No they shouldn't be removed ; but parents should remove the treats and send them out to play & exercize .
Yes , the nanny state is getting carried away . First it seemed like our media was honoring Hugo Chavez..now it looks like our senators( as in Trent Lott ) are running away with our rights . The Independents are beginning to peak my interest .

No but I think the parents should be educated about healthy, nutritional foods, exercise and made aware of the risks of eating bad food and obesity. Maybe nutritional classes would be a good idea. Some people can't help the way they look because of genetics, low metabolism etc.

The answer is to make sure that all parents of children live in a place where there is a store providing nutritious food at reasonable prices to them. Most people already know they're getting fat off junk food and that they're going to be miserable with health problems. Some of these people do not have easy access to stores where there is nutritious non-rotten food....

It's a big brother state, not a nanny state. The more we go on in life the more we are forced to obey the rules. Their will be no size zero models and no fat kids. There will be no smoking in public places. There will however still be crime and hoodies roaming the streets. Ah well. It's not like you can fight it.

parents should be given help to realise and solve their childrens weight problem
going into care is going too far but as a health worker some babies and toddlers are seriously overweight and it is a health risk as the children are not healthy or happy

if a child or baby is seriously underweight action is taken so why not a seriously overweight child too

it is a type of neglect i agree
