(world c final) for god's sake, the ground was wet as hell, the fieldsmen were literally slipping and the shots that went for 4s were stopped halfway through! i think some of the players (micheal clarke, ponting) are being too egotistical. all they could think about doing lately is to praise the team, all the time! that is not all bad but too much can be seen as being thick-skinned towards the other teams. i have heard team captains praising the winning side at the end of a match but i have never seen this in ponting. he always emphasises how good his team is. again, this is not all bad but it can be insensitive. this somehow at the end looks like as if ponting is laughing at other teams for not beating them. i realize this everytime i read or watch ponting.

It's a very sad and disgraceful event - and typical of the "take no prisioners" approach that Australia and New Zealand adopt whenever they play each other, in any sport. That doesn't make it forgiveable - even though it wasn't against the rules of the tournament at the time, as pointed out by Richie Benaud.
Fortunately underarm bowling was banned immediately after this, and sadly for Trevor Chappell he was dropped from the Australian team not long after. The Australian wicketkeeper, Rod Marsh (a very aggressive, but massively intelligent player) clearly disagreed with it - and I've seen interviews with Lillee and Marsh after the event, where they were adamantly against it.
I've also read articles about this incident since then, and the decision to bowl underarm was taken by Greg Chappell - where he then instructed his younger brother Trevor to do it against his wishes. None of the other Australians agreed with it, but at the time this was typical of the way in which Greg Chappell captained the team.
Interesting to note that one of the commentators was Ian Chappell (the other was Bill Lawry), and he wasn't very vocal against it at the time. Understandable, given that his two brothers were involved in it, however he's rarely ever held back on much else!
If you look at the way all of the Chappell brothers played their cricket and have written or commented about the sport since, they've never done anything to win friends. Their approach has always been quite cold and ruthless, which is why (even at the peak of their playing days) they were never favourites of even the Australian fans.
That adoration was reserved for the likes of Marsh and Lillee - two honest and fair, albeit entirely ruthless, stalwarts of the game. They would be merciless on the field, then grab their opponent as the match had finished - offering them a handshake, a beer, a slap on the back, and some shared laughs and moments that still sees them with many friends in the game around the globe today. The same cannot be said, in terms of the warmth towards them, of the Chappell brothers.
I was a little kid in Australia when this match was played, and have memories of this match live. I loved a range of characters and styles of play or attitude amongst the players - but the Chappells were never one of my, or anyone's I know, favourites.
I think it's quite fitting in the video that the last word should go to Richie Benaud. His standpoint on this incident is made very clear and, it would be fair to say, indicative of almost all of the cricketing world's attitude at the time of the event - including Australia (board, players and fans alike - all excluding the captain).
Benaud still has the same direct and intelligent insight into the game, and it's sad to find him commentating less in the game now.

deshabimanee kelle,
1st of all I would thank you 4 showing this incident to all tha world which has been forgotten by cricket lovers.
I must say that this was shamefull act.
As you know Australians always try to justify whatever they do.
Can u imagine the feelings in thr New-Zealanders @ that moment.
SHAMEFULL.
Now I'm goin to point out another aspect.
I know that this is not relavent to this incident.
But I think this is a good opportunity to express it.
CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW THE WHITE NATIONS WILL ACT IF THAT UNDER\ARM DELIVERY WAS BOWLED BY SRI-LANKA, INDIA, PAKISTAN OR WHATEVER ASIAN COUNTRY?
Will that be the same way they acted @ the particular incident?
I beg you all to think about it.
For an example, think the way they acted in the incidents hapend in the final2007.
Dont u think there was nothing fare happend to Sri Lankans.
Why they didnt postpone the match for the following day?
What about Gilcrist's SQUOSH ball?
When the rain came while RL batting, why the umpires didnt offer light to SL?
If D/L method taken into consideration @ that moment, the history would be changed.
Since cricket is a popular international sport, all countries must be served by the same spoon.
Think again.

It was indeed the most disgraceful act on the part of Australia to bowl the last ball underarm, which was against the rules laid down for the tournament.
