hibernation isn't a good idea because the hard drive stopping and starting constantly will make it go bad faster.
the reason your PC is lagging is cause your PC processes are using the majority of your memory. It could also be your CPU is being flooded with instructions.

That's a common problem with most PCs. Any time you leave them alone for any length of time they can have a tendency to lock up on you. The trick is to set your computer to go into hibernation after a certain period of time. That way when you come back in your computer will reboot in a Minuit or 2.
