Not $40 a plate or anything like that, just a 21 year old looking for something a little bit new different, fun and exciting!

I am not looking for anyplace in downtown Detroit, more the surrounding areas. Royal Oak, Birmingam, Troy, Sterling Heights, Shelby Township, Romeo, Rochester etc.

Don't know about that dude! Those areas are pretty upscale. If you're looking for under $40.00 a plate you may want to come back down to Wayne County. Benihana's is a good Japanese restaurant for about that price or maybe Bahama Breeze. Mitchell's in Livonia if you like seafood they're fish is the bomb! J. Alexanders is another good one. All these restaurants are in the Livonia/Northville area.

The places you listed with "etc." could mean anything, anywhere; give some better ideas of where. I'm assuming you mean anything BUT downtown Detroit or Detroit proper, or anything south of Royal Oak (yuck [that refers to RO, not south of it])?

Would you try Windsor? Are you pretty much open to anything besides "downtown Detroit"? If so I can recommend, but you were pretty broad. The places that people have posted so far don't meet your criteria of "different, fun and exciting." What kind of different, fun, or exciting? You have to be more specific. You're 21--do you want a young crowd, a hip singles-type place, a gay or lesbian friendly place, a place that serves alcohol, or a fun place that has good food without a "club" atmosphere?

I recommend you try www.chowhound.com for serious food answers. I'm happy to suggest, just need more information!

Marinelli's in Madison Heights at 12 Mile and I-75 is the absolute best Italian food in the area for less than $20 (except the steak and lobster of course). The portions are HUGE and Tasty so you'll have plenty for leftovers, plus a bar with TVs for sports. Happy Hour appetizer special too.

The best AUTHENTIC Chinese place in the area is East Lake Chinese Restaurant on the corner of Long Lake and Rochester Road in Troy. They have great dim sum on weekends, and their dinners are fabulous (which is why you'll see plenty of Asian people eating there). None of the usual greasy Chinese or Chinese buffet, it's the real deal.

Zumba in Royal Oak is very tasty Mexican and not too heavy on the oil either. The chips are usually fresh and the salsa bar is excellent.

ok, so if you are in Birmingham, go to 220 Merrill. (that is the address.. the name is just "220") There are some ecclectic choices here.. something a little different, and the bar is THE place to hang out after work.. see and be seen. Plus, you can stroll around B'ham afterwards...
If you want really good Italian, I would go to Andiamo's. IT amtters which one you go to for overall food quality and atmosphere, so go to the one on TElegraph Rd. (not the one in Royal Oak) This is a "date night" place. (you don't say if you are alone)
If you are alone or with a bud, go to Royal Oak and eat at The Brewery on 4th or Memphis Smoke on MAin. Memphis has a nice BBQ pulled pork sandwich, plus great music ont eh weekends. The Brewery has great house-made beers plus better-than-most food: chicken jerk sandwich or miso salmon are my favorites.
I can't recommend much on the East side.. sterling heights, warren, etc I don't hang out there.
If you do get a chance to eat in Detroit, The MAjestic CAfe is the best and very affordable.. very fresh and ecclectic choices. It is right on Woodward in the Wayne State area, not far from I-75 interchange.. also near to Detroit Science Center if you are a tourist, and a straight shot down to Comerica PArk. (Detroit Tigers home)

Yes, Noble Fish in Clawson is awesome for sushi, and not expensive--in the back of a little Japanese grocery store.

Albano's Cafe on main St. in Royal Oak has great food, and is never crowded. For Spanish tapas (little appetizers) and good sangria, try Sangria in Royal Oak.

Zumba is a cool order at the counter Mexican place on Main St, also in Royal Oak.

My favorite restaurant in the area is Kruse & Muer, which has several locations. The one in Troy is off Crooks and Big Beaver. They have amazing fresh baked bread and the pizza tastes like the bread...but they serve great seafood and steaks too. It's a Chuck Muer restaurant, who (I think died) opened Charley's Crab in Troy, Rocky's in Northville, Big Fish in Troy, etc.

There are lots of great places to eat in Detroit! Don't listen to the person that answered first, they obviously don't know what they are talking about.

I'm including a bunch of links below for you. Enjoy!

Try Hockey Town Cafe, Hard Rock and so many others.

Detroit Breakfast House and Grill

Lafeyette Coney Island is a Detroit Land Mark

All of these resturants are located in the heart of the city!

Enjoy Detroit, we do have a lot to offer!

based on the respond of massive Fish and Charlies Crab. Muer no longer owns those eating places. Landry strategies based in Houston offered them and that's a franchise with a scripted speech. Landry performs on the Muer stable call, yet once you have been there whilst Chuck develop into alive you will locate the inferior nutrients and repair now.

If you like Ittalian, try Luigis on Jefferson, in Harrison Twp. Its a true Itallian expierence. A very small place, decorated in gaudy itallian decor. The food is out of this world, and very reasonable. It opens at 4pm everyday, and if youre not there w/in the first hour you will wait a good hour for a table, especially in the summertime because of all the boaters. But its obviously well worth the wait, if everyone's willing to wait. This is one of my favorite nights out, when were looking to go out and not spend a fortune on dinner.

Try Jack's or the Beach Club in St Clair Shores. They are right on Lake St Claire.
220 Merrill is very good also, but close to your max of $40 per plate.

Just go down Woodward Ave, Downtown and in New City Center, you can find the Hard Rock (if you have a military ID it only costs as much as a regular restaurant!), Union Street, The Whitney, and Byblos. There are plenty of other places too that I haven't tried yet.
