Probably an older person. They tend to be more knowledgeable.

Depends what the job was. If it was for a physically demanding job, I'd probably hire the younger person as most old people I know are sort of feeble and not as strong as someone younger. If it was an office/desk job, I'd probably hire the older person mainly because A) they're probably more mature than a younger person and wouldn't call in hungover, etc., and also because their families are grown and gone, so they wouldn't have to miss a lot of work for sick kids, school appointments, etc.

Young people are good to hire because they can learn and grow with your company. That is a good reason to hire a young person. An older person, has more experience with life and could be a good asset aswell. It's really up to the individual.

Most of my decision would depend upon the background and experience of the person. However, I would be more inclined to hire the older person in hopes that he/she would be a mature, dependable worker. I've been involved in hiring a young person or two who turned out to be more trouble than they were worth.

depends on the job and qualifications.
older are generally more responsible and better work ethics.
If the younger applicant has a history of working hard (I don't mean to get out of work). Is respectful and not thinking they will be a VP in 6 mos.

That is really vague. Depends on the work.. If it is really toiling hard work, then I would rather have someone young, for many reasons.. But, if it is desk job or customer service where there was not back bending.. I would hire an old person, assuming that I met them and they were not crabby.

Anyone answering this question who says they would prefer a younger person may not understand that it is against the law to discriminate based on age (over 40).
