I live here and that started when I was a student. I like Amsterdam a lot.
Amsterdam is one of the smallest real metropoles. It has an international air, but is quite small with 700.000 inhabitants. The canals are superb and make Amsterdam the Venice of the north. The Van Gogh and Stedelijk are good museums.
It still is a hippie-like city in summer in the Vondelpark and with a liberal view on soft drugs. It has the problems of a metropole with use of hard drugs and (for some it is okay, some not:) the red light district. But as a metropole it has a lot to offer to different kinds of people.
Many people feel at home when they visit Amsterdam.

Yes, I've been there for both business and pleasure.
I went in May and the weather was great!
Went to Anne Frank house, Heineken museum, canal boats.
Walked a lot! Shopped the street markets; had Great meals and great conversations with the locals.

Been 5 times for pleasure, love it there. Loads to do, easy to get around, just jump on a bus or tram, drivers usually happy to help a lost traveler.
Try the Febo snack shops, bright yellow so you can't really miss them. Located on Leidseplein, Rembrandtplein or Dam Square. They do different hamburgers with strange but yummy sauces. Dutch Croquet and Cheese Soufflé great for snacking while on the go.
Great for museums, galleries and cafes (both for cake and coffee shops!)

Amsterdan is brilliant. The Dutch are lovely, it has brilliant museums, great art galleries and good public transport.
The thing I don't like is the Red Light district - it's seedy - but it's only a small part of Amsterdam and you don't have to go there.

Yes went there are and was disappointed to be honest...maybe it had been talked up by so many people that I was expecting it to be superb, but in the 3 days I spent there, I ended up taking a whole day trip in the countryside to fill up my time!!!
To be fair it has some nice views along the canals and I really rate Anne Franks house....the van gogh museum was nice for the 20mins I spent there (and that was really pushing out the time).....I am not into smoking or hiring girls for fun, so maybe that was my problem....It does not rank in my top 10 cities.
