Considering the experiences I have had and currently going through I would say it is to build character. You learn from your mistakes and move on. I truly think that if you have experienced hard times and sadness you have gained something in life called strength. Hopefully once my hard times and sadness are behind me I will be a very strong person. Look out world I am on my way!

Without the bad, the sadness, the times of struggle, we can't appreciate when things are good. Kahlil Gibran said it best :

Your joy is your sorrow unmasked.
And the selfsame well from which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears.
And how else can it be?
The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain.
Is not the cup that holds your wine the very cup that was burned in the potter's oven?
And is not the lute that soothes your spirit, the very wood that was hollowed with knives?
When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy.
When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.

Some of you say, "Joy is greater thar sorrow," and others say, "Nay, sorrow is the greater."
But I say unto you, they are inseparable.
Together they come, and when one sits, alone with you at your board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed.

Verily you are suspended like scales between your sorrow and your joy.
Only when you are empty are you at standstill and balanced.
When the treasure-keeper lifts you to weigh his gold and his silver, needs must your joy or your sorrow rise or fall.

Hope that helps.

First of all the only reason you feel sadness is because you've felt happiness. If you never wanted to feel happy or sad in life then Life wouldn't be fun at all. I like the ups and downs personally. Lastly, I believe people experience depression to thin out the population.

To better appreciate happiness and good times! Without one, we wouldn't have the other. If all we had was light, would we know was darkness was? Everyone knows in their heart that when we endure sadness and hard times, we always walk away with some inner knowledge of ourselves of having learned something from it. If nothing else, it hardens us for whatever may befall us next. Just don't forget to acknowledge when happiness and good times come your way. "Never to suffer would never to have been blessed." Edgar Alan Poe.

Though things may not seem at that time, they are usually for the better. Like say not going on a trip you've been wanting to go on, you never know if while you were going you could have gotten into a terrible accident, ect. Things happen for a purpose.

The purpose of sadness and hard times are: to teach us to be more sensitive to other people's feelings of sadness and to have more empathy for them when they are having hard times and suffer.

If everything in life was easy to come by there would be point to living. You can never really grow emotionally if you don't experience hardships. Looking back from today think about some of the hardships that you have experienced and now think about how they have shaped you as a person. For example when my grandfather died, the one thing he always told me was that my smile could brighten anyone's day. Every since his death even though it was really hard for me, I try to keep smiling because I know it would make him proud.

Without sadness and unhappy times we would not have the latter: Happiness! To appreciate the good things we have, we need to experience not-so-great things or we wouldnt be able to tell the difference. Like if there was no evil in the world, there would be no good.

The great Sir karl Popper wrote that ultimately, life has no
purpose, therefore it follows that sadness and hard times do
not have one either.
Of course,he immediately went on to say
that we can give life a purpose; see his wonderful chapter
called Emancipation through knowledge, written i guess at
height of his powers. Although a hero of mine,he was quick to denounce philosophers-not all-and rightly dedicated his
works to an open society, which Always aims at peace.
He found his vocation in all this;a hardworking but worthwhile vocation.
Although its slightly sad that he didnt get the recognition for his outstanding work,he possibly alone pushed
-the-philosophic boundaries;even finding the time and effort
to come here from europe, and lecture at universities.Even
though his mild criticism of Darwinism recieved a hard time,
the lecture with student questions and answers, was made
accessible;and he praised this land and its people, especially
in the introduction to his Open society And its Enemies.
So its up-to each one of us to find a vocation;being good at
ones work and helping others,is a fair start.Learning not
to be greedy, unlawful, and trying to help those who do not
have much at all,are other purposes.Sir karl,i think,would
not have minded me saying that those things are worthwhile,
even compared to the honors bestowed to those fortunate
to have the time to read and learn, and to teach.

The purpose of sadness and hard times is to help our souls grow. As gold is tested by fire, so are we through hardships.
