I have become really bored with the network side of I.T. and I really enjoy graphics and design..Since I really have no previous professional experience, what type of salary can I probably expect? I don't want to drop too far from where I am now salary wise. So I'm not sure if it's worth it to switch fields at this stage. Any suggestions

Hey Gibran,

Like many professions how much you make in web design depends on how much real world experience you have, education and commitment. I disagree with many of the answers that say there will be a significant pay drop. I am a web designer with about 7-8 years of experience and I am paid well. I also enjoy what I do and am able to express my creativity in my job.

I think the fall off for any IT person switching to web design is that it takes a certain creative type of person to succeed at it. Many professional web designers spent years in multimedia classes and were in creative industries before that. You may also want to consider web programming, or web developing first to get your foot in the door into the web industry and then after you see how everything works, take a crack at becoming a designer.

Unless you are getting peanuts now, the drop will be huge.

Persoanlly I would advice to stick to your job, and learn web design in your spare time, built a few sites, if have to, do it free or for a small fee for some local business, just to get some real world feedback on if you have the ability to deal with the change or not.

Aside from the big drop in pay (if your existing income is anything decent), the move could be beneficial within a couple years if you become more than just a "designer."

If you decide to do more than just ordinary stuff any IT background outside of website coding can put you a step or more ahead of the competition.

Add it to your repirtuar on your spare time and see where it takes you. Hopefully, it will in the end help you make more money. I think it's a good skill to add to your portfolio.

My guess would be that you'd take a large pay cut.
