I disagree. I think that rap music, ie. hip hop is definitely music..I personally listen to not much of it.yet I think that the blending of beats and the verses especially witty rhymes and the very catchy, yet often meaningful verses ( definitely this statement does not apply to ALL hip hop artists ) are of value.
Artists such as Kanye West discuss social issues and there are many hip hop artists who are religous.
I am not an expert and have little experience with rap, but I do not think it should be disregarded as music, even in looking at the accompaniement beats and mixes alone its very impressive, then add the lyrics for talented artists
I teach English and have had students use rap as a form of poetry.
and regarding the educated issue, true most dont seem educated, but some of the greatest scientists and writers of our time did not " seem" very educated.

Familiar question. My response:

Yes Rap is music/art. It is just one of the sub-genres of poetry/music. The Rap music has become a predominant force in today’s music industry. Although the music is probably the first thing that catches your attention, the message contained within is significant.
Today’s generation speaks of love, death, self-expression, personal, political, and social issues, poverty and riches, and life experiences. They intertwine these thoughts creatively and innovatively within strong rhythms and entrancing melodies that capture the heart and mind of the listener.
The mind set of today’s youth can be found within the lyrics of the music the they listen to.
Many times this music is viewed negatively because of the strong language and ideas. However, there is a message embedded within that gives voice to the glories and ills of the surrounding society and community in which we live. The rap artists reflect and echo the works of famous literary artists past and present commenting on some of the same political and social issues that are still relevant today. Once these poetic pieces are researched and explored, one can determine whether the message is relevant and effects change, good or bad, for the listener. Using poetic devices and literary elements, one could create meaningful and insightful poetry that reflects their personal thoughts and the thoughts and beliefs of their generation.
Accomplished Rappers such as Public Enemy, Lauren Hill, Queen Latifah, Jay-Z, and the late Tupac Shakur have all employed the following literary and poetic elements in their musical and poetic work: alliteration, allusion, assonance, characterization, denotation, connotation, metaphor, personification, repetition, rhythm, dialect, figurative language, free verse, hyperbole, imagery, irony, point of view, refrain, simile, setting, speaker.
Hence one cannot argue that Rap music is not music/art nor allege that it is not creative/educated! It is simply one of the many strategies of poeti/musical/creative expression.

Good luck

Rap to me is art. when i was growing up Rap was groups like Run DMC, beastie boys, a tribe called quest, de la soul, jungle brothers, slick rick, common sense, big daddy kane, etc.. late 80s to early 90s rap. These artists would rap or tell a story about some silly stuff.. but even some serious stuff.. and they werent dictated by some catchy hook or some stolen Sting beat.. they were synthesized like new wave music and with turntables.. rhyming to the beat.. songs like Tribe's "can i kick it" or the beastie boys' "girls".

In the mid-90s to now, hip hop came along.. it expanded on the idea of its forefathers.. putting ill lyrics to dope beats.. better flow.. tribe kept it going.. and a lot of underground and mainstream crews like the roots, mos def, notorious b.i.g., jay-z, etc... just listen to the lyrics on biggie's "ready to die" album or jay-z's "reasonable doubt"..

and i think why people call rap junk is they mistake it for something else.. Rap music consists of hip-hop, gangsta, some r&b,etc.. its probably a certain type of rap music that turns some people off..

nowadays, i think that rap music has transcended music and art, because it has now influenced the culture... its more prevalent in the modern world than any other genre of music.. examples: Jay-Z did a budweiser commercial, a lot of races/cultures identify themselves with a hip-hop style.. its in the fashion.. in the sneakers.. in the drinks.. in the video games.. in the movies.. in peoples lives..

another good example was when 50 cent's first album came out.. there was so much hype about it.. i saw old straight-edged caucasian males excited and with more information about who 50 cent was then some people that were really into rap.. saw people in 3 piece suits on wall street lined up to get the first copies..

and its so diversified.. so many people acclumate to it.. and its so accepting.. it doesnt say you cant listen to it because your a certain race or dress a certain way.. you can just enjoy it.. whereas all goth people dress alike.. and if u try to roll to a goth club in super colorful summery clothes you'll probably be denied entrance..

rap is great.. its very educated / very creative.. gang starr's guru graduated from fordham university rose hill campus.. his father's a professor.. theyve all educated themselves enough to know that they can get rich through other means too.. like their clothing lines or restaurants or clubs.. they're always changing.. always adapting to the world.. and progressing their art form, the culture, and the world..

I think that all depends on what your own personal opinion is, what one person considers a good song another person might say its crap. I like all kinds of music and yes their is a lot of crap music out their, but their is also a lot of good music too, i have heard plenty of good rap songs where the singer / artist put a lot of thought and talent into the song just like any other singer / artist.

"Rap" music is an industrial mass marketing scheme that gives "HipHop" a bad name.

Rap is a commercial art, I find it has no soul. rap sucks!

Hiphop is often at times an intelligent art form. hiphop is good

I've always heard that you have a "Rap Act" and a "Hiphop Artist"
