Are you using Windows XP?

If so, locate your Windows XP CD, place it in your CD drive, and then reboot your PC. You should be able to boot from the CD. From there, you can perform a "Repair". This should locate any errors or missing/corrupt files and fix them.

If you are unable to boot from the CD, you may have to enable the option to do so from within your computer's BIOS settings. Usually, to get to your BIOS (motherboard chip) settings, reboot your computer and watch the screen. It should say something along the lines of "Press the DEL key to enter system setup". It is usually the DEL or the TAB key.

Once you are there, look for Boot settings and change your first boot device to your CD drive.

WARNING: Be very careful when editing your BIOS settings. You could cause damage your computer even worse than it is now, if you do not know what you are doing.

the repair option in windows is lacking to say the least you want to do a repair install here is how

# Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.
# When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below

This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft
Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.
# Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.

To setup Windows XP now and Repair Install , press ENTER. do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console). I repeat, do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R".
# Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.
# Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair. If Repair is not one of the options, END setup. After the reboot read Warning#2!
# Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.

after a repair install everything might work ok but if you start getting random problems a full re install is suggested but the repair install should atleast get you up and running enough to backup your stuff

It sounds to me like you're gonna need to use your Recovery Disc. It should have come with the computer when you got it, and should be in with the books on it. Good luck. I had that problem, and that's what I had to do. I lost a lot of stuff though, and even had to re-create 2000 names in a family tree program because I couldn't find my back up disc. I sincerely hope you have your important documents backed up somewhere to reload once you recover.

Why do you think they call it 'Windows'?
Don't you feel like dropping it out of one?
