lol, people try to hack the FBI all the time, but the FBI pays people thousands of dollars to keep their systems secure.

Most viruses these days are designed to produce some benefit for the coder. For example, lots of viruses make your personal information available so that bad guys can use it to access your bank accounts and such. Other viruses might target only specific people or companies, such as one that the coder might have a personal grudge against.

But lost of malicious software comes in the form of malware. (which includes spyware and adware) These you usually pick up from internet sites (especially the more *questionable* ones) and they do things like display pop ups for random stuff even when you're not browsing. This is in hopes that you'll buy stuff from them.

But to answer your question in one sentence, people put viruses into computers because they're trying to profit from you somehow- whether it's you buying something or them taking something from you (like bank numbers) to make money with.

Many hackers and rogue software designers design viruses for different reasons. Some just get a sick pleasure out of it and others do it to access information on your computer such as your identity. The reason why no one could put a virus on "FBI" is mostly because such an agency has professional computer programmers to combat such problems and have their networks firewalled to the hilt.

The better question is why are there ignorant people who download viruses in the first place. Very few viruses are transferred without the user actively accepting it. If you have Windows updated, you are 99% safe from viruses if you don't run programs that you don't know the origin of. This is no different than infomercials, spam, phishing, and work at home schemes. People prey on stupidity. The people who make the viruses aren't ignorant, they're just assholes.

THE VICTIMS ARE THE IGNORANT ONES!

That is an interesting question. It is like asking "Why do people murder their spouse or abuse their kids?" If I knew the answer to your question then I would try to get a job with some law enforcement agency to solve the problem. There is one bit of good news in a related area. Somebody recently figured out a way to arrest a notorious spammer for identity theft.

What you should really learn is that the first computer virus was just done as a prank. Back when computer programs were still designed by mathmaticians who could understand binary.
