I'm writing a novel based in the 1690's and the main character has to perform a song. does anyone know of any songs that were popular in america around that time? thanks!

The only songs they used would be Bible verses set to a simple chant. The 1690s sounds like the era of the Salem Witchcraft trials, and the Puritans didn't believe in entertainment, holidays or very much fun at all. They didn't use songs just to sing or entertain. What they used were Psalms from the Bible that were set to traditional patterns of notes.

That's your job to do the research. Dont cheat your readers by guessing. You can find that out by looking at lists of songs in public domain. Just google Songs in Public Domain and you will get long lists. Scan through them for one with the right dates. I hope you are doing the rest of the period research - getting the clothing, modes of transportation etc correct. Do you have a Descriptionary? Very necessary book for writing a period piece. Research old religious hymns. That's nearly the only type of music that was performed in colonial America.
