I keep hearing that from film majors & stuff. I heard John Hughes wrote Some Kind of Wonderful b/c he wanted the main character (Eric Stoltz) to fall for the best friend rather than the "cool/popular one" (Lea Thompson) like Molly Ringwald did w Andrew McCarthy in Pretty in Pink. Does any1 know if this is true?

No.

Eric Stolz's character is the average guy who gets a date with the hot girl purely by accident and turns it into his dare to be great moment. The only thing is that Emma Thompson is not who he thought she was and when he gets to know her better he winds up figuring out that she is alot like him only she has been playing the game longer. As for Mary Stuart Masterson's character, she gets the guy but only because she was the friend he never knew how much he cared for until he kissed her.

As for Pretty in Pink. Molly Ringwald's character is in love with Andrew McCarthy's character from the get go. She wasn't trying to prove a point or social climb. She was just being with a guy who wanted to be with her. Of course there was Ducky, the Duckman, the friend who wanted to be there for Ringwald's character but who knew when faced with true love that he was not the man for her.

I can see how you might think that this was all about the Duckman getting the girl, but; it is all about being who you are and being with the one you love.

I like your way of thinking, though.

It makes sense, but have never actually heard or read about this. John Hughes is great. I love all his movies. 16 Candles, Weird Science, Pretty In Pink, Some Kind of Wonderful etc. etc. All great 80's movies.

In the socioeconomic aspect, no because Amanda Jones wasn't rich, she just dated a rich guy like Ringwald's character Andie in Pretty In Pink.

But character wise, then yes, because Keith ended up with Watts instead of Amanda. At the end of P in P, I felt cheated because I thought that her quirky fashion sense was wasted on bland Blane.

Never heard that one before. I love both of them equally. Reminds me of how great the 80s were if you were a teen. There are no more great teen angst movies like this anymore. Today's teens are all oversexed perverts. Which one do you like better? I've always been a huge Some Kind of Wonderful fan myself!!
