why is hot air hard to breathe?

I was in a 180 degree sauna today and felt like I couldn't inhale at all.

It's not actually the hot air it's the humidity. You feel like your breathing water. And the hot air with it does not help our lungs were not built for air at that temp.

I cannot comment on the breathing aspect, it would appear quite a lot of people talk out a load of hot air.
