We are in NC and this tree is very old. Someone hit it with their car this week and put a large gash in the tree about the size of a standard monitor?

Dont do anything - leave it alone!!!!!

TRees get damaged all the time, they are quite capable of healing hemselves.

Do not remove any bark!!!!

Do not remove any wood!!!

This will only damage the tree more.

If you want, you can wrap a porous material around the woulnd- this will help keep dirt out, but will allow air in and out and allow the wound to dry.

All you can really do is keep an eye on it and make sure no fungus or mold grows in the wound.

If you see fungus or mold growing, gently wipe it off with a damp towel to remove it.
