I was in the security business and this shop was being broken into each night, The owner borrowed a big noisy dog and left it in the shop overnight. Next day no break-in, but the dog had eaten umpteen bars of chocolate and was sitting with a very swollen belly - and a smile!!!

Hi Nathan,

In the UK.

Yes it is legal provided the dog is under control at all times, it is not for sale and the shop does not sell food.

It's quite legal to have a live dog in a non-food shop. However, a dead dog would be a totally different matter!

If they sell food it illegal.

If they don't sell food it will depends on your local laws; you can also call heath services and ask because all stores open to the public must have a permit to make sure they meet hygienic standards; but for sure the dog must have all its vaccine shots.

It seems you want to rat your boss. You can try but don't expect to have SWAT storming into a magic store. If it were a donut shop maybe.

It all depends on where you work or who owns the place.

I've seen places that aren't pet stores with animals in them. A lot of the time the owner brought their dog to work because it was well socialized and they didn't want to leave it at home all day by itself.

And pet stores, generally animals are allowed. But not all.

So basically it all boils down to who owns the building and his/her rules.

Yes, it's not a food shop. My local craft shop, jewellers, newsagent all do. I can also take my dog in to any of them too - he's not a guide do

Yes it is in pet stores.
And in regular stores guide dogs (dogs of service) are able to enter.
