Reagan's involvement in the arms race. It made it so expensive to keep up, the Soviet Union collapses. It was also encouraged along, however, by the USA's support of various dissident groups and individuals in eastern European countries. The old soviet union collapsed internally due to economic reason's, it had nothing to do with US policy, or the Afghan war! The collapse was also helped along by revolt in eastern block countries in Europe.
