Dan: Actually, you're right. I know a lot more about basketball than computers. Too bad you can't say the same.

If you right click on the start bar and select task manager you will find three tabs, applications, processes, and performance. On the performance page, physical memory is shown as total, available(free) and system cache.
Another measure is named commit charge. The total available represents both physical memory and virtual memory. This is the number you want to look at as far as how much is free.
Virtual memory is very misunderstood by a lot of people here. It plays a critical part in the overall performance of the system. Most large applications and the OS look for and use virtual memory for lower priority or less used functions and data lists. This allows the system and applications more physical memory for the core components of the applications and system.
Virtual memory is held in a special file called a page file on the hard drive. The difference between data in the page file and other data stored on the hard drive is it has been processed and compiled by the CPU so it's retrieval is passed directly to the application without having to go thru the CPU again. This makes it function almost as fast as coming from RAM and is why it's called virtual memory.

A simple definition of virtual is, almost, or very close.

I hope this clears thing up some for you.

People often confuse memory with how much space they have on their hard drive.

To find out how much RAM is available. You can right click My Computer and take a look at the bottom of the window. To see how much RAM is being used currently, use CTL + ALT + DELETE

To find how much space on your hard drive, go to my computer and right click the hard drive (usually named 'C') click properties and it will show you a pie graph of how much space is available.

Virtual memory is memory on your hard drive only used when absolutely needed. Most people will never use virtual memory. It's a backup when you're running many programs requireing lots of memory.
Hope that helps

If you select the My computer icon with your right mouse button. Select properties. It will pull up your computers ram.

To see how large your hard drive is open up the my computer icon and select your hard drive or hard drives and select properties.

In this you will see how much you have downloaded onto your drive and how much hard drive you have free.
