Id go with the back pack. I had a messenger bag for a school year and it SUCKED! i will never buy one of those again. 1 time i had so much homework and i put the mesenger bag on and by the time i got home {3 minute walk} one shoulder was higher than the other. Trust me stick with the backpack

Messenger bag. Backpacks are sooo out of style it's not even funny. And no offense, but people with backpacks always remind me of "special" kids. The only reason you need to carry a backpack is if you're hiking, biking or something.

I think messenger bags are impractical for carrying anything long distance. the easy access is good...but once I got any amount of weight into a messenger bag, my shoulders and back started to hurt from the uneven distribution of weight. I imagine this uneven weight distribution would annoy me even more if I was trying to ride a bike but I think some of the higher quality messenger bags have straps and construction that mitigate this somewhat.

Messenger back is the 'IN' thing now and besides backpacks are so Elementary.
Beside carrying so many weight of books in a backpack can also damage your back (spinal cord) think about it
good luck

Backpack!! A messenger bag with carry all weight onto one shoulder making it hurt to carry books a tote bag will make it harder to carry books in your hands or on your shoulder because what if your carrying heavy books? I would say backpack because you carry both weight on both shoulders

i would get a backpack personally. they are better for your back when you carry lots of heavy books. i used my backpack all the way through college. orothopedic people always say that the best bag is either a backpack worn with both straps or a rolling bag. otherwise you are at risk for hurting your back.
i know that's probably a little nerdy opinion, but it is what I would do.

it depends. if you need a lot of space, go with a large backpack. personally, I have gone through 6th and 7th grade with a messenger bag with 3 four inch textbooks coming home every night, but my bags are fairly large. so really, it all depends on how much space you need

I'm a messenger bag girl, and always will be. You can sling them on with ease, and they're less hassle than backpacks, and generally better looking. :)
Quicksilver were doing some nice floral prints when I last looked in there, so try that store out! :)
