Our fridge freezer has just blew this is how it happened. First we noticed an awful smell (Not a food smell) like almost a chemicle burning smell, then about 3 minutes later it went with an almighty popping type bang and fliped the trip switch at the fuse box, i replace the fuse in the plug, tried again and it whent with a popping bang and tripped the fuse box again.

Any help welcomed.

Is it totally shot?

Depends on make and model, could be that the relay on the compressor has burnt out, if so it's worth replacing. Or maybe the compressor itself has gone, in which case a new F/F may be the better option!

I believe it is more likely the defrost heater has shorted to ground, most likely the evaporator. Unfortunately if it has, it usually burns a hole in the evaporator and you lose all the refrigerant. But it may have shorted to a different metal piece in the freezer and your evaporator is okay. I have seen this many times. It may be a shorted relay on the compressor but the newer solid state relays don't really burn out with that much fanfare. You should be able to locate the source of the odor by concentrating your sense of smell to both areas (in the freezer compartment and behind the refrigerator where the compressor is located). Good luck.

mice are very well known for nesting under refrigerators because its warm there and they are protected. As you well know, I am sure...if theres a nest...there are babies...and just like human babies...they pee where they are, without handy diapers. You need to pull out the fridge and see if you have a family living under it. Sometimes the smell will waft into the coils and the heat will make it smell 10 times worse. Good Luck...I hope thats not the case...I would be running faster then Forest Gump, personally...

You have a short in the fridge. Likely caused by the condenser blowing out or the motor burning out. I suspect the first, because of the chemical smell. The burned motor would have a more rubbery smell to it. Call a technician, or buy a new fridge, if your is old.
Sometimes it pays to junk an old one, rather than repair which could be quite expensive.

The compressor very likely froze up, the motor started overloading became very hot (the smell) then burned out and popped the fuse

Bottom line mate, sounds like your compressor has gone. Get a quote to replace and recharge the unit. Good chance you'll be cheaper off buying a new one. Sorry

Hi, the relay on the motor has burned out, it's like an overload device and when it goes it smells like a burning wood charcoal smell, sometimes they can be replaced for about 45 pounds depending on the make, Danfoss motors can take replacements, but on the whole it may not be worthwhile.

Sounds like the fan motor, relay, or compressor failed. If it is the fan motor or relay you can replace them. If it is the compressor then it will be cheaper to buy a new fridge.

in not sure. it might not be the fuse but there may be a fault with your freezer. it might be the part that helps to cool down the food that has blown.
