I am a PC tech and system builder. You don't need the Windows CD to take everything off it, but I don't know who will buy it without the Windows CD incase something goes wrong. If you have any questions feel free to email me at mhurst002@columbus.rr.com.

Save all the files you want to keep on cd. Then, whatever kind of computer you have, contact that company and ask for a new restore cd for that specific model. It only takes 2 days to get in mail. It costs about $10.00. Runt he restore cd on your computer tkaes about 45 minutes. It will erase everything and restore it back to the factory settings. Your operating system will still be there and all you info gone. I have done this several times with other computers that I sold. Good luck!

You can download something called the Ultimate boot CD and use that to format your hard drive or use the Killdisk utilitiy that is there. This totally wipes everything off the hard drive.
The only problem is that the guy who buys it will have to install a new OS.
If you want to keep the OS on it then you have to manually go though and delete your files (good luck, windows hides them all over) and then defrag your hard drive.

Congratulations, there's another way that I would like to share with you. Not many people know about it as they're stuck with Windows. But here's your chance to change that!
Use a Live CD like Freespire Live (wiki.freespire.org/index.php/Download_Freespire). Just pop them in your Combo/CD Drive during startup. Look for the files in the My Computer and you're off to go. Also see wiki.freespire.org/index.php/Running_Freespire_Live .

You can find several freeware programs on the web that will allow you to format the drive.
But that does not ensure that someone could not recover the data off the drive.
If you are worried about people getting the information on your hard drive, then your only sure option would be to physically remove the hard drive and keep it.

Well it is a long process I think, but you could search for all your personal files and pictures and programs you want to keep and transfer them each to a blank CD disk or floppy disk to store them until you can transfer them to your new computer...
