You don't need to know how to swim in a particular manner, but if you go through proper training you will need to pass a swimming test, which is graded pass / fail on completion not form. This is a non-stop swimming distance of 200 Meters (a little over 600 feet) without mask, fins, or snorkel (or 300 meters with them). Afterwards, there is a treding water excercise where you have to float (or dog paddle) for ten minutes. Proper training consists of class time, pool time, the swim test, and then certification dives in a lake, river, spring, or the ocean.

Depending on where you dive, "swimming" may not even be a big portion of your experience. Diving in the ocean and in rivers is actually called drift diving where you go in the direction of the current and there isn't alot of actual effort exerted to get from one place to other. You will have a BC jacket that will allow you to float on the surface while you're waiting to get on the boat, and so in most cases, you will just sit there and float until it's your turn.

I can't swim freestyle, but I'm a qualified scuba diver: I did breaststroke. The important thing is being able to swim a reasonable distance and be comfortable in the water. I had to swim 200 metres on my front and 100 metres on my back (without a break) and then 50 metres with a weight belt. I had to float for 5 minutes and then tread water with my forearms out of the water for 30 seconds.. I also had to swim 15 metres underwater and retrieve 3 objects from the deep end of the pool.
When you're scuba diving, you use fins and use the freestyle leg kick: there's more than just drift diving in scuba. I hope the foregoing is of help.

You should be ok..taking scuba class will probably help you to succeed in swimming. But you definately need to know how to tread water. Good Luck.

I'm sure it would be a requirement to be a decent swimmer before taking scuba classes.

You would be wasting an awful lot of money if you didn't know how to swim.
