As a man, I believe that the answer is protection. The key part of your question is "without losing masculinity". The reason that you want a masculine man is because of the percieved protection. You see the gender role assigned to men as that of the bodyguard.
A man can be a protector without being a jerk. That is the key to making women adore you.
Many men think that the only way women will think they can protect them is if they pick a fight with everyone, including the woman herself. This is clearly not the case.
Today's women do not need a man to stand up and fight for their rights. They need a man they know they can fall back on for emotional support, one who will agree with what the woman wants to do with her life. This safety net is the protection that is replacing the "If you talk to my woman I will kill you" attitude that was there before the women's rights movements.

If he would be understanding of me and my needs, as I try to understand his, to do the small things like he used to do when we were dating then I would adore him and be putty in his hands. No one needs to change themselves for the other person, but you should show your true self from the beginning and not forget the reasons you loved them to start with. A man doesn't loose his masculinity to a woman if he shows his true feelings to a woman or if he takes the time to do something special.

There's always going to be something they'll want you to change.

Focus on yourself and what you feel you need to work on. Only when you're comfortable without a woman are you usually capable of supporting one.

Same holds true for women without men, heh. Singles games are fun.

Notice how it's always about what men can do to please women. How often do women ask what they can do to please a man, or become more appealing? Women today have become so self-obsessed it's sickening.
While I was married, I changed SO MANY parts of who I was in order to try and please her. It doesn't work. You give, you give and you give. She takes and takes and takes, and of course, finds something else to complain about that you have to endure yet more nagging about.

So my answer is do not change.

If she doesn't like you for who you already are - she clearly is not good enough for you.

If you recognise changes in yourself that you could make, to become a better person in general (not 'just' for women) then do so. But do it for YOU. Not some nag-hag who can't see their own need to change as well.

Become a good listener. Become compassionate an understanding. Show feelings sometimes. Learn to compromise. It's all about both of us, not just me.

Listen with every ounce of my being - try to make her laugh more - and do the little things (flowers, cards, emails, take her kid fishing, send HER mom a b-day card, etc,)

I am a man and my answer would be becoming a better person. Being kinder, more giving, more compassionate, and more considerate of others.
