What I don't understand is why is the Gaza Strip under Palestinian Authority control? Actually, now that Hamas has blown everything up, it's in a state of civil war. What I want to know is why isn't Gaza controlled by Egypt, as it was before the 1967 Six Day War? Wouldn't the Palestinian population be much better off governed by an Islamic country than by Israel? I would imagine Israel wouldn't want control over a lawless mess anymore, and having Egypt control the strip is better than anarchy, yes?

When Egypt had control of Gaza, they used to mine the borders so that the poor Palestinians could not escape and flee into Egypt.
Of course Israel doesn't want Gaza; why would she? Remember she only got control that bit of land during a war in which she was fighting several Arab nations for her survival.
The Palestinians democratically voted for Hamas, so in theory, they would be glad that Hamas are now in control of Gaza. It's a real shame they didn't vote for Fatah instead, because Fatah are more moderate and secular.
Hamas are a radical Islamic group, so in fact Gaza is now being governed by an Islamic authority, as you suggest should happen in your question.

The palestinians would be no better off under egypt then they are now.
did you know that many arab countries around Israel signed laws making it illegel to provide citizenship to palestinians?
Its true - here is an example: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2003695437_lebanon06.html?syndication=rss
The arab countries fear that if they provide citizenship and absorb the palestinians it will remove one of the biggest reasons for attacking israel.
The Arab nations surrounding Israel use the palestinian refugees as pawn in politics.
This is a thoroughly documented truth.
This iswhy all the Palestinians in Lebanon still live in refuge camps after 30 years.
Have you heard about the fighting in Lebanon now between a militant group and the Lebanese army? The militants are in a refugeee camp and the Lebanese army is not allowed to enter the camp. http://www.smdailyjournal.com/article_preview.php?type=bnews&id=75267&eddate=
"Lebanon says it has no authority to enter the camps under understandings with the Palestinians that give the PLO the authority in the camps."
Gaza strip under the Egyptians would be exatly the same as it is today, if not worse. The Egyptians would probably deny most of the palestinians the right to work outside ofhte Gaza strip - Israel allowed this until the current uprising started. And if Hamas tried this under Egyptian control, the Egyptian army would respond and there would be many more deaths.
People blame israel for th plight of the palestinians without ever looking at how other muslim nations treat the Palestinians - Israel treats them better then anyone else does.
In fact some ofthe worst groups came into being as a result of arab neglect of the palestinians - Hezbollah was formed after the Israeli-Lebannon war in the 80s and almost all of their energy and finances goes toward providing education, medical and food aid to fellow palestinians. Hezbollah is so popular because they are the only organization providing basic care to the palestininas because all the other arab countries refuse to.

Gaza belonged to Israel since ancient Biblical times. Under God's law it continued to fall to the Israelites through Abraham's son Isaac. Israel took it back in the Six Day War.

Despite Israel getting a bad rap for every single thing it does, if you look at how they have handled their foreign relations, it's very fair and forgiving. When a country attacks Israel and loses (which is 100% of the time) they also have to give up some of their land so that when they decided to make peace, Israel can give them a little "thank you for not warring" gift. No other country does this ever.
Israel is surrounded by 7 hostile nations that would be like us having to look over our shoulder at Canada, Mexico, Hawaii, Bermuda, Haiti, The Caribbean, and Cuba all the time.

you want the main reason?
Egypt dose not want it!
Egypt was offered Gaza in 1973 when it made peace with Israel, it said no.
I would be shocked if Egypt even entertained the idea of taking Gaza.

Great point, actually. But Israel is afraid that if they give an inch, the terrorists will take a mile. Furthermore, we don't want Gaza as a base against us. But great points, and I honestly could see it working better your way.
