People use Linux instead of windows, some people use OSX if they use a mac instead of windows.

Windows is a type of software called an "operating system" or OS. Than means it is automatically loaded when the computer boots and then controls all the other functions and softwares on the computer.
Besides Windows, there is also the Unix operating system. Unix comes in several different versions with Linux being the most popular for home computers (because it is free).
Apple MACs run on their own OS. The current version is OS10 or OS X. The newest MACs, which have Intel rather then Motorola processors, are also able to run Windows.
There are also other OSs available, but they are not common. Windows, Linux/Unix and MAC OS or the big three.
