I have seenit a lot since my Dad went to live in a nursing home. One man came in looking somewhat healthy just after his wife died. Over the course of less than a month he became more and more despondent, stopped eating, and stopped doing his normal fun activities like crossword puzzles. He died.
I have also seen people with a strong will to live defy their doctors who've written them off. If people can have a will to live, they can have a will to die too and it's usually grief that puts them on that course.

Actually, that is one thing that I have been always meaning to ask you for the longest time already because you didn't say from the last time what caused her death or something like that. So I was curious what caused it. I really had to restrain myself from asking you because you seem happy these last few days and I don't want to remind you of that incident. I sympathize with your loss, but I really don't know what to say. I know this incident have really caused some shock wave in your life at a very young age, so it's o.k. to grieve over it, but I sincerely hope it will not get the best of you. I really hope you won't mind me saying a few verses from the Bible, but I will just do this as a proof of my message. This is a part where Jesus was tested by the Pharisees and the question about resurrection arose in the middle of their conversation. And allow me to quote Jesus' response to that question found in Matthew 22:29-30: Jesus said, "At the time of resurrection, people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; because they will be like the angels in Heaven." - Matthew 22:29-30

Yes, I believe a person can be so sad from grief that they die. Probably has something to do with the heart. Maybe that's why you've heard stories people dying from a broken heart.

Not just from the emotion, but from other self-abuse that could be caused by the emotion. Some people stop eating, and their immunity decreases, leaving them more susceptible to disease. If you have a heart condition, the grief could increase your blood pressure. There has never been a person medically declared as "cause of death:grief"

It's not common but it's possible. Grief can have a lot of effects on the body and cause people to lose motivation to live.

No, it just feels that way. Since Billy Graham's wife died this week, he'll be right behind her. It won't be from grief but from losing the will to live.

i think it is, but in a round about way, suicide is a way to die from grief, but to not kill yourself, and just die of a broken heart i could see that happening too. like if you get so sad that you wont eat, sleep, etc. it would eventually kill you

It happens a lot to older folks. The wife dies and the husband has nothing left, so he dies a couple of months later. I personally know of 3 examples of this.

Many times we hear of one spouse dying soon after the other one dies. I believe one can die of a broken heart. That's why it is important to seek support when one is grieving..
