The pressure that is generated is most likely initiated by the grant providers who give money to scientists to complete the studies. These grant providers are given contributions by many people including those who are politically motivated, and the result of a study may dictate if your grant will be renewed. Since profs and scientists are often given tenurer or promotions based on their ability to wrangle grant funds, they will often come up with a result that "satisfies" the provider, whether teh provider leans right or left.

I wouldn't say they have closed minds, but they are experiencing pressure. And not just from the left, but from the right as well. You simply cannot find a study that isn't biased one way or the other.

LOL no. Politicians don't have that much influence over science.
There are a few Global Warming deniers that are in the pockets of industrial companies though, like there used by be a few Cancer deniers in the pockets of cigarette companies.
