I put a T-12 in a T-8 fixture and got little light and a burned out ballast. I recommend you change the ballast not just the bulb, the power saved is right on the lamp. If you are changing a 40 watt for a 20 you are saving half.

You would need to change the ballast. I heard thatventually all new flourescent lights would b T-8's anyway.

T8's require a new ballast also.
The cost to convert will be realized in savings in a short period.
