Ben Turpin (brilliant).
Born 1874 Died 1940
After answering this question, I did a bit of research and found that Ben Turpin apparently only appeared in one Laurel & Hardy film (Saps at Sea 1940). The person who many, including me, are getting mixed up with is James Henderson Finlayson (born Falkirk, Scotland 1887, died Hollywood 1952). As well as being one of the original Keystone Kops, he was in many Laurel & Hardy films.
Very easy to get confused as they look fairly similar, apart from those 'cross eyes' which Turpin often claimed to have insured with Lloyds of London for $25000
