The social concept of being the 'best' is put there so you will compete for something and move society forward. It is forced on you from birth by your parents who were forced by theirs. You are made to believe that what you are is only defined by what you do and what you do must be leveraged against what 'others' do. The pursuit of the 'best' idea is initially driven by your parents desire for you to be 'better' than they think they were. They leverage what you can do against other children and then label you as either 'gifted', 'average' or 'slow'. This is continually reinforced by 'encouragement' to 'do better'. This pattern is carried through adulthood and driven by the basic business hierarchy and mantra of 'the best rise to the top'.

The answer to your question then is; you think you are the best because you were told to.

Knowing and openly admitting I am the worst. If someone said they are the best, then they would just be covering up the fact they aren't.
