In my experience (~10 years) of working on laptops, 99% of the AC power plug problems were caused by the user.

The plugs themselves are VERY fragile and most people don't bother to unplug the laptop when they move it. Your laptop may not have even been defective, you could have bumped it on accident or even simply tripped over the power cable.

Most companies like Acer, Dell, HP and Toshiba require you to deal directly with them for warranty replacement. The company you bought it from is usually only responsible for that type of thing within 30 days of purchase. But the laws vary.

It is also common for companies to require you to pay for the shipping of the item to them.

Once there, then they will determine whether it was a bad solder joint or from some kind of physical damage. It will be very easy for them to tell the difference.

For now, you pretty much have to go by what came in the warranty documentation that came with the laptop.

A retail outlet is not responsible for warranting what it sells. Especially if there is a "manufactures" warranty in place, weather that warranty is still in effect or not. But if you talk to Comet they may be able to work with you on replacing the unit.

Should have checked for the warranty before purchase. Tough life lesson. My acer's keyboard is screwed up, sometimes have to punch keys 2 or 3 times to get them to work, had it replaced and still does the same thing

Don't know the laws in the UK or your warranty, but Acer should fix it and comet should possibly pay for it.
