The head gasket on my Peugeot 106 has 'gone' for the second time within six months. (I was told the cylinder head didn't need skimming the first time but something tells me it did!!). Someone told me to use HG sealant because it would save a lot of money, rather than have the HG replaced.
Does anyone know if the sealant works? and if it does, how long might I expect it to last, roughly?
Alternatively, if I get the head gasket replaced, how much longer might I expect to be able to continue using the car?

The car's 9 years old, has an 1100 petrol engine and has done just under 100,000 miles. I really don't know what to do and would be very grateful for any advice, suggestions, etc. Thank you

Sounds like the previous place just wanted to get rid of you quick! It's rare for one of these heads NOT to need skimming.

If it's otherwise okay, yes have the head skimmed & the gasket replaced by someone who knows what he's doing. It's important that the head is torqued down in the right sequence. The sealant rarely works satisfactorily.

If you were to try to get rid of it now, you'll get virtually nothing for it so it's as well to soldier on with a car you know and that's running well.

You can almost answer the question yourself ! Is the car in decent condition otherwise ? Does it need a set of tyres or a Cat, is the clutch on the way out,how long to the dreaded MOT. Make a list of negatives and price those up.Your head gasket and skim will be about £250 to £300 at a reasonable garage. If many of the items need attention than you will quickly be above £500 in total so it would not be worth putting money into the car.

Forget the sealant. Have the head skimmed and a new gasket. Should last as long as the rest of the car does if you are not having any overheating problems. Make sure cooling system is in good nick. Good Luck

you should of had the head skimmed its allways best to do it has there could be little pits and marks in it but you can not see them has it will not seal properly. you should allways replace the gaskets has sealent does not work. it is totaly up to you but think about if you do get it replaced this time properly you no it has been done with no worrys, if you deside not to just think you might buy another car and 6 months down the line you have the same with the new car.
just look at it the way i would think how much money i have spent and say a load of things have been rplaced and they will not need replacing for a long time so you have no worrys but you might have problems with a new car and it will cost you more money.so it is up to you.allso the milage is not to bad for the age of it.hope this helps

You need to find out what the car is worth with the repair carried out properly, and offset the cost of having it repaired. If it is an aluminium engine the head WILL need skimming. The repair probably failed due to not cleaning the head and block properly. Personally, I would use gasket goo SPARINGLY as well as a new gasket.

If you need a car, it will cost you about £1000 to replace it with a reliable alternative, so compare the repair costs with that. Make sure you use a good workshop if you pay top price, and get a warranty on the repair.

gasket manufacturers do not entertain warranty claims unless you can prove the head was machined at the time of fitting a new gasket ! if correctly surfaced it will last indefinately providing corrosion (which will require welding) is not responsible for gasket failure. use good quality gaskets.
