I have 6 month old twins. 1 boy and 1 girl. the boy chows down solid foods and drinks bottles like a champ, but the girl clamps down her mouth, and refuses to eat unless its her bottle. The doctors aren't too concerned yet, her growth and development are great, but she is missing out on a lot of food experiences and if she keeps this up, I'm afraid there will be problems not far down the road. Does anyone have any ideas on how to entice my little girl to eat from a spoon?

It's really not necessary to have solids in their diets just yet. So if she doesn't want it just yet, I wouldn't force it. But when you are feeding her twin brother, you can sit her beside him, let her watch, and maybe even put some baby food, like fruit in front of her and see if she will try it on her own.....let her play in it a while. You never know, maybe she'll end up getting some in her mouth and end up liking it.

I wouldn't be concerned yet, some babies don't show interest in food until around 8 months- which is perfectly fine and normal. Until then, most of their nutrition come with their formula. But after 8 months if she still refuses, let the doc know and they may have some suggestions. Also, I know people say not to do this but my friends daughter was the same way & this is how they got her to eat- Put just a few spoonfuls of the food into her bottle with her formula (or breast milk or whatever) & make the hole slightly larger until the food comes out just like regular flow of formula. She might get the tatste for it & begin to *want* more of the flavor and eventually may open up for the spoon :) Good luck!

Wait a few weeks and try again, my daughter didn't start cereal until she was 7 1/2 months. Every child develops at different rates.

I have a friend with 18month old twins, one walks the other doesn't, the one that doesn't talks. They are identical. Just don't push it, it will happen.

Also, just let her suck on the spoon and play with it. Do not worry about the food, she gets all her nutrician from the formula anyway, food doesn't really take over until after a year old. If you push it on her, she will find it terrible and never want to eat.

Just relax, it is not that important yet.

If you are really worried about her missing out on food experiences, you can try getting a blender and say you wanted her to have carrots.. blend up some carrots and put them in a bowl and feed her with a spoon. This way it isn't artificially sweetened and it tastes EXACTLY as a whole carrot. If that doesn't work then try reverse psychology....if you could make a carrot look amazing when you eat it and make her interested in it, when she reaches for it pretend to munch on it and make it sound so delicious.. then when she reaches for it again let her try it.. That's the best idea I can think of =)

my little cousin just had the same problem! my cousins doctor told her that there is an item at Babies R Us that will help you!

im not sure of the name or brand, but ill just describe it to you and maybe that will help you!

it looks like a spoon handle, and the part where your mouth would usually go is round with a small netting hanging form it, and you put the solid foods in there, and let the baby suck on it, it will get mushy and come through the netting! and it helps them get used to the taste and texture of "big kid foods" so you can eventually move on.

another tip, gerber graduates! they have every step to getting a baby to start eating solids! look into it!

I wouldn't worry about her missing food experiences, since she has her whole life for that. She sounds like she's just a picky eater, and isn't that big into change. So take it slowly. Keep trying to give her different things until you find something she likes, then stick with that for a little while. And who knows, maybe she'll be one of those babies that just wants to feed herself. You could also try putting a little tiny bit of the food into her bottles so she'll at least get the taste of it with her formula. I think as long as she's healthy, and her doctor isn't worried, she's fine. It's not going to harm her development at all.

When my nephew used to come over, he would refuse to eat from a spoon by my mother. I would come up and grab the spoon and do "Here comes the airplane!" and do some airplane noises and move the spoon around and then bring it to his mouth. He took it right away. Just turn it into like a game. She'll probably smile/laugh and take it.

6 months old is the EARLIEST to introduce foods. At this age, they arent necessary. She will eat them when she is ready.

Here is some good info on how to start solids, and also why its ok if solids are delayed. http://kellymom.com/nutrition/solids/index.html
