I have always thanked people before receiving an answer because if I don't, I feel as if I am being impolite.
Do you think I should continue saying this or should I stop?

As we are all very kind and part of the vast "Yahoo Answers" community, 'thank you" is taken as a "given" so you need not say it each time.

don't thank them at first you don't know what kind of answer you will get you would never want to thank a rude person
