im not good with them so how does the diamond selection work? and quality stones?

You should consider the 4 C's: cut, color, clarity & caret weight.

The 4 C's are four variables that are used to calculate the value of a diamond -- Clarity, Color, Cut, and Carat Weight.

Cut, Clarity,Color,Shape,Carat and of course the Price you should be going for a near colorless or if you've got the money a colorless stone.

color and quality, there is a letter and number code for each diamond. The lower on both the better. Go to tiffany's whether you buy something from there or not they can school you on it.
