start with a full tank. set your trip odometer to zero. at the next fuel stop, divide the miles by the number of gallons you purchased.

This is easy with a short answer and a long one.

First.. go fillup your car. Write down your mileage and the date on a piece of paper and tuck it into the car

Now drive the car around for at least a few days or a couple of hundred miles - whichever comes first.

Now go back and fill up the car again. Write down the mileage, the date and this time also write down the number of gallons you used.

For the QUICK answer.. divide the number of miles you drove (the difference between the last mileage and the previous one by the number of gallons you just pumped in.. presto.. Miles Per Gallon (MPG).

For the Long but more accurate answer continue the process and each time you pump gas FILL the car and record the mileage, number of gallons and date.

when you have driven the car for a few months.. add up all the gallons and subtract the latest mileage from the very first one. Then divide the miles by the total gallons.. you will get a more accurate value that averages out unique events that might give you an innaccurate reading (such as being stuck in traffic for hours with the engine idling).

If you can not FILL the car, then make sure you simply note the number of gallons you put into the car the mileage and the d ate. You can not use that value for a quick answer but you MUST add the gallons into the Longer method to get a correct answer.

Lastly.. there are a lot of free downloadable programs that will do the work for you and even plot graphs of you gas usage. Try www.download.com and you might find one there.

1. Fill your tank w/ gas
2. Zero out your odometer
3. Drive, etc.
4. The next time you get gas: write down the mileage on your odometer (the smaller number, the one that can be cleared); write down the number of gallons (see gas pump) put into your car this time
5. Divide the miles driven (on odometer) by the number of gallons (the one you just wrote down)

--> This will give you the miles per gallon for your car.

Fill up the tank as much as possible and take down the mileage. Take a trip over 100 miles then take down the mileage and fill it up again. Divide the distance into the amount used. Example if you used 4 gallons to go 100 miles your M.P.G is 25. This is better than how the factory does it.

Fill your tank full and write down you odometer reading. At you next fillup, check the miles you have driven and divide that by the number of gallons it take to fill the tank. Like if you went 200 miles and it took 10 gallons to fill, you would be getting 20 mpg.

use the trip counter. Zero it when you fill up your car. Let it run until the next time you fill up. Divide the total miles driven by the total gallons you put in. That's the actual miles per gallon.

Make sure you FILL UP your gas tank both times. It won't work otherwise.

next time you fill up write down the miles on the dash then next time you fill up divide the number of miles between fills by the number of gallons on the second fill up

you must know the capacity of your gas tank first

then run the tank out until it is almost empty

then take it to the gas station and reset the trip odometer

fill up

when that tank is finished look at how many miles the trip odometer says

you can calculate the you miles per gallon

The easiest way is to look it up on the internet.
There are a couple of sites that will give you the Est mpg on your vehicle, unless it was made before 1978.
What kind of car do you have?
