If the currency you have is from a major country or the Euro you can exchange that currency for US dollars at any major/international airport for practically free. I travel outside the US and always use the airport currency exchanges. You'll see 2 prices...buy and sell. The sell price is higher as they make their money that way.

It depends on the currencies you have (the difference between the buy and sell price is much bigger for the not so usually used currencies) and where you exchange it. In some countries they do charge as good as nothing, others charge rather much. Personally I never exchange money just across a border (including airports) because in general their exchange prices are not as well as 'land inwards'. You could also ask your own bank. And, depending on the currencies, I wouldn't mind exchanging it myself. That way we can both save some costs :)

From 1-10% of the amount depending on where you turn it in. Local banks are more than big banks. Major airports have currency exchanges at a decent rate.

Call your local bank. They provide that service for travelers and each bank has a different fee structure. They'll generally charge less if you're a customer.
